Chore Chart

Tuesday, January 25, 2011
Sometimes, I forget that part of owning a house is actually taking time to clean it. It isn't that I don't like having a clean house...not at all. The problem is that I always think of all the chores that need done all at the same time, then feel too overwhelmed to do any of them. Then when the weekend comes along or we have visitors coming over, we always end up doing a massive all day clean-a-thon. Yuck.

Lucas and I decided it would be helpful to be able to see a list of all the household chores that need to be done each week. I was charged with coming up with a way to post them. My solution was this chore chart. Yes, I feel a little bit like a preschooler having to have a chore chart, but at the same time...it is so very satisfying to move the little magnets below the line when I have finished a chore!

How I made it:
  • I bought a roll of adhesive magnetic tape at Hobby Lobby (1" tall).
  • Cut the tape into 2.5" strips.
  • Adhered a piece of white paper to each strip and wrote the name of a chore using marker.
  • Stuck them on the refrigerator.
  • Cut a longer strip of magnetic tape (8") and adhered some scrapbooking paper to it.
  • When we finish a chore, we move it below the line. We move everything back up above the line on Sundays and start over.
That's it. I have some blanks made up if we think of some things that aren't getting done and we want to add. I didn't add any of the daily chores like dishes, cooking dinner, making beds, etc. since we don't have a problem getting those done. Just the "big ones."

So, now you know. We are 30 years old and have a chore chart. I feel better getting that out there...

  1. Cute!
I've beed doing the Flylady method and have been very pleased. Usually I just write my things to do on my wipe board on the fridge and then swoosh em off.

Take a peek if you wanna see: www.flylady.net (not my favorite site of hers, but has many good links.)

  2. A good idea and clever way to stay organized. I hope you get a reward on Sunday if the chores have all been done...at least a sticker :]

  3. That's a great idea. I like being able to see what all needs to be done, it makes it seem much less overwhelming. We used to keep a dry erase board in our kitchen and we would write what needed to be done but I like your magnets better.

  4. hey, we all need some help in that area! i find there to be so much that it's overwhelming so instead of either a) living with the mess or b)organizing, i am opting for c) get rid of absolutely everything you don't need. i don't enjoy cleaning (though it is a great stress reliever) so why not make it so that i don't have much to clean?!

  5. I was trying to do a similar system at one point, but I just made myself chore cards. Maybe it's the kindergarten teacher in me, but I love charts and things for me too.
