spin me right round...

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

The past few days have been a real "adventure" around here.  I woke up in the middle of the night on Sunday night to go check on Lincoln, and stumbled towards his room, bumping into the door on my way out into the hall.  I picked him up, brought him back to our room, weaving the whole time.  I thought maybe I was still half asleep or the blood was all rushing to my head or something.  After I nursed Lincoln, I handed him to Lucas and told him something wasn't right because the room was still spinning.  I decided to go back to sleep and hoped it would be better in the morning.

At 6 something, I woke up again, then sat up and promptly fell over.  Hmmm.  Not quite what I was hoping for.  I tried walking around the room, but couldn't even stand without tipping over.  Lucas and I decided I should go to the doctor.  He got up and got Lincoln dressed while I laid there, getting progressively worse.  By the time Lucas got back to bring me some clothes I was nauseous and couldn't even walk with assistance.  I had to stop and fall to my knees every few feet on the way to the car.  We were headed to the ER at the this point, since my progression from slightly dizzy to can't even stand up went so fast.

When we got to the ER, Lucas went to get me a wheelchair and then tried to manuver me, the baby, and himself all inside the hospital by himself.  Finally someone came to help him out and took me while he and Lincoln went back to park the car.  I got hooked up to the EKG and got asked a bunch of questions.  I have no idea where I was or who was helping me because I couldn't open my eyes.  I tipped forward out of the wheelchair twice and kept getting told to stop trying to stand up (I WASN'T trying to stand up--I just kept falling, but no one believed me apparently...).  Then, the nurse wheeled me out into the hallway and said wait here.  So, there I sat in the hallway by myself, falling out of my wheelchair for about 5 minutes.  Finally another nurse walks by and grabbed my chart from the back of the chair and pushed me to a room.  I asked if she knew where my husband and baby were and she said she didn't know, she just found me sitting in the hall.  Great.

So, the waiting commenced for the doctor.  I was in the room by myself for about 30 minutes before they finally let Lucas and Lincoln come back (kids under 12 aren't generally allowed in the ER....).  The doctor finally arrived about 2 hours after we got to the ER.  He was in the room about 60 seconds.  He ordered antevert, to be followed by valium if the antevert didn't work.  He also ordered a CAT scan and blood work.  The nurse returned to do the blood work and put in an IV in case I had to have the valium.  Boo.  About an hour later, I got picked up and taken down for the CAT scan.  The scan showed no abnormalities, so that was good.  When I returned, the nurse watched me walk down the hall to the bathroom, running into the wall on the way, and brought the valium in since I was obviously still dizzy.  I asked to nurse Lincoln first since I wouldn't be able to for 24 HOURS after taking the valium.  Lincoln was way too overstimulated by the ER to nurse more than a minute or 2, so we had to make do.  In went the valium, and the wave of sleepiness was almost instant.  Sleepiness, but not an end to the dizziness.  The doctor decided at this point I could either be admitted and continue to receive valium by IV, or go home with a prescription for antevert and follow up with the ENT.  Option 2 it was.  I have been on antevert now for 2 days, and am still mildly dizzy.  Most annoying is the eye twitching.  I try to stare at an object, but my eyes just won't hold still!

I have an ENT appointment tomorrow and will be sure to update any new findings.  Weee!  Hopefully it will all be gone in one more day.

ps--i know this is not the most coherent writing I've ever done...I can't stare too long at the screen, so I have to look away a lot, then forget what I've written....

  1. Scary! Did they check you for excessive water in the ears, allergies, etc? Sounds like vertigo for me. I've had that happen to me before, but not to that extreme. Don't google your symptoms, though. Every time Jeff does, he thinks he has cancer... Toothache - cancer, bugbite - cancer, crumbs from dinner on his shirt - cancer. You get the idea. Feel better!

  2. Kelly! I hope you feel better soon and they get this all figured out. Vertigo is scary. I get it sometimes because of my Multiple Sclerosis. Regardless of reason, it is miserable and scary. At least we know it is a symptom that doesn't necessary mean the worst. It's just a miserable one.

  3. I feel soo bad we are not there to help, it is always so horrible to be sick with no family around. Thank goodness Lucas was already home when it started. Hope you are feeling better soon. So you can all get some good sleep.

  5. I had some vertigo at the end of my pregnancy with Delaney. It's sooo weird!! I would walk down the hall and kept bumping into the walls. It was never so bad as what you've experienced though. I hope you get better soon!
